Summit Veterinary Advisors Adds DVM, MBA, AVA To The Team

Effective March 1, 2011, Michael Hargrove, DVM, MBA, AVA, has joined the team at Summit Veterinary Advisors as a Valuation Analyst. Regardless of whether the economy is expanding or contracting, veterinary practices of all types require an accurate valuation to make sound business decisions. A valuation is a necessary tool in any transaction regarding the purchase or sale of a practice, change in ownership structure, or when planning an exit strategy. Too many veterinarians approach retirement believing their practice to be worth much more than a professional valuation may determine. Therefore, seeking the guidance of a valuation expert simply makes good practice management sense.

Dr. Hargrove has actively assisted veterinarians in preparing valuations for their practices for the last seven years. A graduate of Colorado State University, he has practiced veterinary medicine for two decades, currently owns a four-doctor practice in Minnesota, and is also a shareholder in a large group of emergency practices. This unique combination of experience, along with the practical application as an MBA and Accredited Valuation Analyst, allows Dr. Hargrove to speak directly to the needs of veterinarians as clients, and help them navigate these complicated business matters.

Summit Veterinary Advisors’ co-founder and principal, Lorraine List, CPA, CVA, met Dr. Hargrove through VetPartners, an association of veterinary consultants and advisors, while working on the valuation council which was created to elevate the standards of veterinary practice valuations. Lorraine states, “As a practicing veterinarian who is also a practice owner and formally trained to perform valuations, Michael brings a broader perspective to the valuation process. He has a wonderful talent for translating financial information in ways that his colleagues can understand and relate to.”

When considering which company to join, Dr. Hargrove said, “Summit Veterinary Advisors is the one firm I wanted to be associated with due to the quality of their work, reputation, and respect for Lorraine, who has built a tremendously successful financial consulting firm that exclusively serves the veterinary profession.” Highly regarded as an expert in her field, Lorraine is the author of AAHA’s just-published Valuation of Veterinary Practices, Second Edition, as well as several other books and articles widely published throughout the industry.
